Dr. David Yaro

Head, Department Of Statistics, Mathematics

As the Head of Department, It gives me immense pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all of you to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We stand at the threshold of an extraordinary academic journey that will shape minds, inspire innovation, and prepare the next generation of mathematical thinkers and statistical analysts for an increasingly data-driven world.

Our department has long been recognized as a beacon of mathematical excellence and statistical rigor. For years, we have maintained our commitment to advancing the frontiers of statistical knowledge while providing world-class education that prepares our students for successful careers in academia, industry, and beyond. We take pride in our distinguished faculty, our cutting-edge research, and most importantly, our exceptional students who continue to achieve remarkable success in their chosen fields.
The department offers Bachelor of Technology (BTech.) in Statistics with Computer Studies and Diploma in Statistics programs that cover the latest developments in the emerging software’s and technology.

In our data-rich era, statistics has emerged as the compass that guides informed decision-making across every sector of society. From healthcare and finance to technology and governance, statistical thinking enables us to extract meaningful insights from vast amounts of information, quantify uncertainty, and make evidence-based decisions that shape our world.

The career prospects for our students have never been brighter. Statistics graduates are in high demand across industries including:
• Technology and Software Development: Machine learning engineers, data scientists, algorithm developers
• Finance and Banking: Quantitative analysts, risk managers, actuaries
• Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals: Biostatisticians, epidemiologists, clinical researchers
• Government and Policy: Economic analysts, survey statisticians, operations researchers
• Academia and Research: Professors, research scientists, and statistical consultants.

Department Of Statistics, Mathematics

OVERVIEW

The Department was established as a servicing department in 1994 and named the Department of Mathematics and Computer Studies. In November 1999, the Department developed a curriculum to run the Higher National Diploma in Statistics (HND Statistics) and as a result, extended its name to include Statistics. Eventually, the department became known as the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies. Subsequently, the demand for opportunity for progression intensified and so, in 2017 the Department developed a curriculum and gained accreditation to run an eighteen (18) month Bachelor of Technology degree in Statistics (B.Tech Statistics) in response to the needs of the students for a top-up programme. Since then, the department has been mounting courses in HND Statistics and B.Tech Statistics (top up) 18 months.

In March 2021, the University’s Council gave its approval to split the department into two namely:

  1. Department of Mathematics and Statistics; and
  2. Department of Computer Science and Technology.

OBJECTIVES

In line with the stated vision of the University, the objective of the Department is to train students who intend to qualify as statisticians in the industries. At the end of the programme, students would have acquired skills to: solve problems in science, industry, commerce and business; teach in the basic and secondary schools; and contribute to the country’s developmental needs in research institutions and industry.

VISION

The vision of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to become a center of excellence that provides practical training to students and equip them with knowledge and skills needed to perform professional duties as statisticians and become functional members of the society in relation to census, survey, quality control and other statistical projects and activities.

MISSION STATEMENT

Statistics department will be committed to the training of highly skilled human resource in the business, marketing and computing with statistics in close collaboration with industry and commerce.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

  • A Four-Year Bachelor of Technology in Statistics.
  • A Diploma in Statistics
  • A Top-up Bachelor of Technology in Statistics.
