OVERVIEW
The Department was established as a servicing department in 1994 and named the Department of Mathematics and Computer Studies. In November 1999, the Department developed a curriculum to run the Higher National Diploma in Statistics (HND Statistics) and as a result, extended its name to include Statistics. Eventually, the department became known as the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies. Subsequently, the demand for opportunity for progression intensified and so, in 2017 the Department developed a curriculum and gained accreditation to run an eighteen (18) month Bachelor of Technology degree in Statistics (B.Tech Statistics) in response to the needs of the students for a top-up programme. Since then, the department has been mounting courses in HND Statistics and B.Tech Statistics (top up) 18 months.
In March 2021, the University’s Council gave its approval to split the department into two namely:
OBJECTIVES
In line with the stated vision of the University, the objective of the Department is to train students who intend to qualify as statisticians in the industries. At the end of the programme, students would have acquired skills to: solve problems in science, industry, commerce and business; teach in the basic and secondary schools; and contribute to the country’s developmental needs in research institutions and industry.
VISION
The vision of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to become a center of excellence that provides practical training to students and equip them with knowledge and skills needed to perform professional duties as statisticians and become functional members of the society in relation to census, survey, quality control and other statistical projects and activities.
MISSION STATEMENT
Statistics department will be committed to the training of highly skilled human resource in the business, marketing and computing with statistics in close collaboration with industry and commerce.
